The Panama Canal Authority (PCA) has been implementing various measures due to the prolonged dry season and insufficient precipitation in the Canal watershed. A few methods include the use of water saving basins in the Neopanamax Locks and cross-filling in the Panamax Locks.

Despite all measures taken, the level of Gatun Lake has continued to decline to unprecedented levels for this time of year. The PCA has reduced the daily transit capacity to about 32 vessels per day since July 30, 2023. Most recently, the PCA announced new limits:

  • 24 passages a day from November 7 to November 30, 2023
  • 22 passages a day from December 1 to December 31, 2023
  • 20 passages a day from January 1, 2024, to January 31, 2024
  • 18 passages a day from February 1, 2024, until further notice

The number of booking slots and distribution of slots per booking period for each vessel category for the above-mentioned conditions is presented in the attached.

We understand that the PCA’s recent restrictions and operational adjustments have raised concerns regarding transit through the Panama Canal and its potential impact. Mohawk Global continues to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates to those impacted.
