The US Department of Commerce is considering expanding Section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminum, and copper to additional derivative products.
A Federal Register notice published August 6, 2026, requests public comments on 14 additional product categories, including certain electrical cables, fire extinguishers, trailers, cranes, machinery parts, musical instruments, and steel containers.
What Products Could Be Affected?
If the proposal is finalized, many of the products under consideration would be subject to a 25% Section 232 tariff. Certain products, including some agricultural trailers and steel containers, could be subject to different rates.
No new tariffs are in effect yet. Commerce is currently reviewing information related to metal content, import volumes, domestic production capacity, and national security considerations. Public comments are due August 27, 2026.
