We are excited to share the continued growth of the Mohawk Global Container Exchange (MGCX)—our rail-based solution designed to make international container transport more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible for clients across Central and Western New York.
A Smarter Way to Move Containers
Launched in 2019, MGCX was created to solve a challenge many importers and exporters face: the inefficiencies and rising costs of traditional trucking. By combining rail and truck transport in a one-way model, MGCX streamlines container movement between the Port of New York/New Jersey and Upstate New York while helping businesses significantly reduce their carbon footprint.
“Our goal has always been to build supply chains that make sense—for our clients, our communities, and the planet,” said Gar Grannell, CEO & Chairman of Mohawk Global. “MGCX proves that sustainability and performance can go hand-in-hand.”
Expanded Capacity to Support Growing Demand
As more companies look for reliable and sustainable inland transportation options, Mohawk Global has expanded infrastructure in key markets:
- Syracuse: Doubled the fleet to 48 GPS-equipped 40-foot chassis for safe and efficient local operations.
- Buffalo: Leasing 15 chassis to support regional exports within a 125-mile radius.
This ramp-up ensures consistent service and gives shippers dependable access to the equipment they need.
Eliminating Waste Through Smarter Container Repositioning
A major advantage of MGCX is its unique ability to reposition empty containers for export use—preventing unnecessary empty moves back to port or overseas. This model reduces emissions, saves time, and creates a more reliable equipment pool for exporters throughout Western New York.
Big Environmental Impact, Big Cost Savings
Every MGCX train has the potential to replace up to 280 truck moves, reducing road congestion, fuel use, and wear on equipment. Clients using the service can cut up to 85% of carbon emissions per move.
The economic benefits are just as compelling:
- Syracuse shippers save hundreds of dollars per container compared to direct trucking.
- Buffalo exporters can achieve up to 50% cost savings per move.
“It levels the playing field,” said Rich Roche, Senior Vice President. “Small and mid-sized businesses now have access to a solution that reduces costs, simplifies logistics, and supports their sustainability goals.”
Made for Businesses of All Sizes
MGCX is built to be scalable and accessible—even for companies without dedicated transportation departments. The service supports anywhere from 5 to 60 export loads weekly, plus a growing number of imports. Clients benefit from a single point of contact, clear communication, and the expertise of Mohawk Global’s experienced team.
