8/26/2024:

The Canadian rail network is back on track after the Canada Industrial Relations Board’s (CIRB) Binding Arbitration ruling, which resolves the labor dispute and ended the lockout.

The CIRB issued its ruling late Saturday, August 24, ordering all parties to return to work. In response, CN and CPKC rescinded any last remnants of their lockouts. The TCRC has stated they will lawfully comply with arbitration decision, and as of 12:01 AM this morning, trains in all networks began rolling again.

Although the TCRC plans to appeal the decision—which may lead to future disruptions—there is no immediate threat of a shutdown.

8/23/2024:

  • Strike ongoing at CPKC; new strike to begin 8/26 at CN, shutting down rail networks.
  • Picket lines have been lifted at CN Rail but are still maintained at CPKC, with TCRC challenging the Binding Arbitration
  • CN Rail  trains have been moving, but full operations have not resumed and progress now threatened by new strike announcement.
  • CIRB Tribunal in charge of Binding Arbitration is reviewing the matter with “utmost urgency” but timeline for final judgment is unknown.

8/22/2024:

  • CN and CPKC prepare to restart operations, TCRC hold picket lines in place and review legal options.
  • CIRB directed to enter TCRC and CN/CPKC into Binding Arbitration, ending lockout.
  • CN/CPKC halt operations at 12:01 AM due to announced strike/lockout action.

8/21/2024:

  • No resolution between CN/CPKC and Teamsters Canada Rail Conference labor union (TCRC).
