Client Alert

Labor contract negotiations started up again yesterday between union representatives for the International Longshoremen’s Association and their employers, the U.S. Maritime Alliance.

On September 20, we informed you that the contract deadline had been extended to December 29, per federal mediators now involved in the negotiations.

With the news blackout imposed by federal mediators, it will be difficult to know if the talks are progressing toward a positive result—a new labor contract before the deadline.

Given the situation, Mohawk recommends that cargo departing in November and December be booked with ETA’s at East Coast ports prior to the week of 12/24 or after the first week of January, if possible.
