The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) are expanding their response to New World Screwworm (NWS) following multiple confirmed detections in the United States. As a result, both Canada and Mexico have imposed export restrictions affecting certain live animal shipments from the United States.
In response, the CFIA announced temporary import restrictions on livestock, including horses, entering Canada from areas affected by NWS.
USDA has also imposed a temporary halt on exports to Mexico of the following animal categories from all US states:
- Cattle (slaughter and reproduction)
- Wild ruminants (non-bovine)
- Equine (slaughter, breeding/work, and sport/exhibition/transit)
- Sheep and goats (slaughter and reproduction)
- Swine (reproduction)
- Ferrets (commercial and pets)
- Songbirds/ornamental birds/raptors (commercial and pets)
At this time, pet dog travel to Mexico may continue under previously established NWS certification requirements. USDA has indicated that additional guidance will be issued.
