The United States has delayed the implementation of additional 50% tariffs on certain Canadian imports, giving the US and Canada three more days to negotiate outstanding trade issues.
The tariffs were scheduled to take effect August 19, 2026, but a new White House proclamation temporarily suspends the duties until 12:01 a.m. ET on August 22, 2026.
What Products Are Affected?
The additional Section 338 tariffs apply to certain Canadian:
- Alcoholic beverages
- Dairy products
- Motor vehicles
The original July 20 proclamations authorized additional duties of up to 50% on covered products.
What Does This Mean for Importers?
The three-day suspension is a delay—not a cancellation—of the tariffs.
Importers of affected Canadian products should continue reviewing their classifications and potential duty exposure and monitor developments as the August 22 effective date approaches.
If no further action is taken, the additional tariffs are scheduled to take effect August 22 at 12:01 a.m. ET.
