UPDATE: 7/31/24—The unrest in Bangladesh has begun to subside, below is the latest impact on cargo.
- Congestion has eased at the Dhaka Airport and flight operations are returning to normal as the internet connection has been restored.
- The port of Chittagong has resumed full operations, and all three terminals are back to loading and unloading containers.
- The port of Chattogram is still suffering from congestion, which has led to prolonged ship docking and sailing delays.
In recent weeks, Bangladesh has been gripped by widespread student protests, prompting the government to impose a curfew aimed at restoring order. Initially set to expire on Monday, July 22, 2024, the curfew has now been extended through Tuesday, July 23, 2024, due to ongoing tensions and concerns over public safety.
Extended Curfew Measures
The curfew restricts the movement of citizens across the country, affecting daily life and economic activities significantly. Key transportation hubs such as airports and ports remain operational but with limited services, leading to disruptions in supply chains. This has resulted in a notable shortage of manpower and resources for businesses and essential services alike.
Impact on Cargo
The economic impact of the extended curfew is profound. Many businesses have had to scale back operations or temporarily cease activities altogether. Transportation is particularly affected, as the curtailed movement of goods and personnel disrupts normal business functions.
Connectivity & Communication
With the internet blackout, the port and public have no access to the systems they need to operate and communicate. This has created uncertainty amongst the public as many are not aware of what is happening due to the lack of information.
As the curfew persists, its effects on businesses, public services, and the daily lives of citizens are becoming increasingly apparent. We are hopeful that a resolution will be found for the safety of the Bangladeshi people and will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
