On Thursday night, September 25, President Trump announced via Truth Social a new set of tariffs that will take effect October 1. These measures target a range of imports, including pharmaceuticals, furniture, and heavy trucks, with the stated goal of encouraging US manufacturing and protecting domestic industries.

Pharmaceuticals
A 100% tariff will be placed on branded and patented pharmaceuticals entering the US. The only exemption applies to companies actively “building” manufacturing plants in the US—defined as projects that have broken ground or are under construction.

Furniture and Cabinets
Imports of kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and related products will face a 50% tariff starting October 1. In addition, upholstered furniture will be subject to a 30% tariff, which the administration says is in response to an oversupply of these products entering the US market.

Heavy Trucks
Heavy trucks imported into the US will be subject to a 25% tariff. According to President Trump, this measure is designed to safeguard American manufacturers such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, and Freightliner and to ensure the long-term stability of the US trucking industry, which has been tied to national security interests.
