The impact of terminal slowdowns at YICT terminal, in Yantian, has caused a ripple effect that is paralyzing the region’s ports. Quarantine restriction has caused labor to be in short supply. This has limited the number of active berths to only five of what would normally be 16 vessels working at any given time.

There are 34 vessels at anchor outside the port, up from 24 less than a week ago. Other vessels are shifting to alternate ports like Nansha, which is now reeling from additional volume—with gate dwell times up dramatically to five hours or more.

Local area highways have become miles-long parking lots of containers, further crippling the flow. The pile of laden containers in the port continues to grow, hindering terminal efficiencies and burying containers, which may take weeks to move off terminal. More than 15 vessels have already announced omitting port calls in the upcoming week with more to follow.
