Client Alert
Despite progress between labor and management on a master contract, local contract talks between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the New York Shipping Association (NYSA) turned sour on opening day.
Negotiations began and then quickly ended yesterday after disagreement on several issues, including work practices. The ILA and the U.S. Maritime Alliance are still scheduled to meet on the coast-wide master contract next week.
Should they fail to reach an agreement before February 6, there are three possible outcomes–a strike, a lockout, or a third contract extension.
