If there’s one topic that importers and exporters can agree upon, it’s the byzantine and non-standardized nature of the terminology, acronyms, and charge codes used by ocean carriers and NVOCCs to describe their services. In a world where a quote for a 5-cubic-meter less-than-containerload shipment literally contains 10 different charges, it’s nearly impossible for a shipper to know what they’re paying for and if the invoice they ultimately receive will match a quote or contract. This hands-on session will demystify ocean freight terminology while bringing clarity to the key pricing elements of one-off quotes, direct carrier service contracts, and negotiated rate agreements. Consistent with new service agreement requirements found in OSRA 2022, this module of TPM Academy is designed to help shippers to not only understand maritime billing terminology, but also to enable the negotiation of quotes and agreements that are unencumbered by endless lists of charges.
